Year in Review 2016

I’m a bit late with this, but better late than never, right? Besides, it’s a perfect opportunity for me to abuse gifs.

2016… not my best reading year. Massive reading slump for the first half or so of the year. Didn’t manage to finish my reading challenge. However, I did read some amazing books this year, so it wasn’t all bad. First, let’s get the stats out of the way. I read 74 books in 2016 (80-ish, if you include re-reads) out of my goal of 100. I’ll just leave a link to that nifty year in books thing GR offers if you want more details. Now, let’s get on to the reading.

Let’s see… I think the crown has to go to ACOMAF. I mean, I’ve read the book three times, THREE TIMES, in less than a year. That book just adsjhfk. And still, I have not managed to write a proper review of it. I wiiiiillll, I promise. third time’s the charm. As soon as I catch up with all my other reviews. It’s just that… how do I convey my love for this book in words?

SIX OF CROWS! Six of Crows is right on its heels. Aaahhh, that series killed me! (I have reviews for both of them.)

Then, I read some painfully beautiful books such as The Book Thief, The Nightingale and The Giver.

2016 was also the year I was introduced to V. E. Schwab and found myself a new favourite author. A Darker Shade of Magic and A Gathering of Shadows have left me wanting more, more MORE of Schwab’s writing in general and that series in particular.

And last, but most certainly not least, 2016 is the year I took my first steps (and then marathoned through the whole damn thing) into the rich and magical world of the Kingkiller Chronicle. Ahh, yes… The Name of the Wind, my newest obsession. Despite the sheer size of if, it only took me about a week to finish The Wise Man’s Fear, and now I am left waiting… waiting… waiting…

Unfortunately, there have also been a few books that I hated. Not as many as those that I loved, but alas, still a few. The crown for the absolute most infuriating book I have read this year goes to Glass Sword. This book pushed all my buttons and invented a few more buttons just so it could push them.

Eldest comes right after it. I just could not wait to finish this book. Goodness, I have read many books over the years, but few have managed to annoy me quite so much.

Another vast disappointment was The Sin Eater’s Daughter. I had expectations for this, but it was just… no.

The Game by Terri Schott was probably my only DNF of the year. I just could not be bothered to finish it.

Okay, just one more absolutely cringe-worthy book. I am not even sure why I read it… it was just so bad it was funny. I’m talking about Touch a Dark Wolf by Jennifer St. Giles. I don’t even… this book was just ridiculous.

So, there you have it. The best and the worst of 2016. How was your 2016?

5 Series I Probably Won’t Finish – Part One

5 Series I Probably Won’t Finish – Part One

I read a lot of series. And I have a very bad habit of starting a lot of series and then leaving them unfinished, not because I don’t want to finish them, but just because I’m weird. But sometimes, I start a series and the reason I don’t continue with it is because I actually don’t want to. There are quite a few, so I will serialise this and post 5 series at a time. I will also link to the Book Depository and Goodreads pages of the first book in the series, in case you’re interested.

1. Tunnels by Roderick Gordon and Brian Williams

5160arzmcdlI really loved this series when I read it. It was really interesting and I had never read anything like it. I haven’t read anything quite like it since then either. I read the first 3 books and about two thirds of the fourth. I’m not sure why I didn’t finish the fourth one, but I just didn’t. And now, it’s been so long, I’ve forgotten so much about it and I am just not going to re-read them just so I can continue with the series. It’s a good mystery sci-fi though. With some elements of horror, I would say.

2. The Sin Eater’s Daughter by Melinda Salisbury

21936988I did not like this book. It was boring. I went into it thinking it would be about this weird girl who was born with poisonous skin. And I thought we would get some cool mythology about the sin eater. I thought it would be some sort of creature or wizard or magical being… I don’t know. Something other than a fat lady who eats a lot. But no, this book was just disappointment after disappointment. It was boring. And the main character was stupid and I was always annoyed with her and just, ugh. I have to admit, it does have a cool cover though.

3. The Selection by Kiera Cass

10507293This is another series that I just did not like. I know a lot of people do, but it annoyed me and I thought it was badly written and badly thought out and I have a whole rant about it on Goodreads if you are interested. The books do get a bit better as the story progresses, but the plot was mediocre and the characters were just awful. I read the main trilogy and I have no desire to read the other ones. They’re not even with the same characters.

4. The Elemental Assassin by Jennifer Estep

6611038This is an adult urban fantasy series that is not bad, but it’s not good. And it’s so freaking long. It’s like over 15 books long, I think. I am never going to finish it. I’ve read 4 books and I might read a few more books in the series, because they’re quick reads and they’re entertaining, but I don’t think I will ever read  all of them.

5. His Dark Materials by Phillip Pullman

9780375823459I loved The Golden Compass. I loved the movie and I also loved the book (although for some reason, I enjoyed the film more). But I read about half of The Subtle Knife and I didn’t like it so much. I mean, I didn’t dislike it, but I got bored with it and I just never finished it. And as with the Tunnels series, I will probably not go back to the books and re-read them and then finish the series.
