Overall series rating: 5/5 stars
Genre: Urban fantasy, YA
Author: Victoria Schwab
Synopsis: Kate Harker and August Flynn’s families rule opposite ends of Verity, a grisly metropolis where violent acts summon real monsters: bloodsucking Malchai; clawing Corsai; and soul-stealing Sunai. The truce that keeps the families at peace is crumbling, and August is sent to spy on Kate. But when Harker’s men try to kill her and pin it on the Flynns, August and Kate find themselves running from both sides, in a city where monsters are real…
I have yet to read a Victoria Schwab book that I didn’t love. This series made me feel feelings. The characters, man. Precious little cinnamon swirl that August is, I just can’t even.
Monsters being born out of acts of violence? How cool is that? I don’t normally love urban fantasy. I’m not sure why, but it’s a bit hit and miss for me as a genre. But man, I loved everything about this world. I loved how dark and twisted it was, I love the role that music plays in it. I just think it’s so cool and there aren’t that many music related magic systems out there. At least that I know of.
I loved the relationships between the characters. August and his sister made me so happy. Although the story was fairly classic as far as adventure, thriller-y type stories go, there’s just something about Victoria’s storytelling that keeps you on the edge of your seat even though the story isn’t wildly unpredictable. The ending though! Man, that packed a punch!
For some reason, I don’t feel like I have a lot to say about the series other than that I loved it. Maybe it’s because I read it a while ago and only just now got around to reviewing it (I’m terrible, I know.), though I don’t think so. It’s not that I don’t remember details, it’s just that I’m not sure there is anything that needs saying beside that it’s awesome and you should give it a try.
I’ve yet to read this series but everyone I know is always absolutely raving about it so I’m hoping to get to it soon!Great review!
