I did this a long time ago and I had a lot of fun with it so I decided to give it another go. Basically, I selected 6 books and then randomly selected 3 pairs. For each one of the pairs, I’m going to write a mashup synopsis.
Caraval & The Blade Itself
Scarlett Dragna has never left the tiny island where she and her sister, Tella, live with their powerful, and cruel, father. Until she receives an invitation.
Logen Ninefingers, infamous barbarian, has finally run out of luck, so when he finds a mysterious invitation, he doesn’t hesitate.
Nobleman Captain Jezal dan Luthar, dashing officer, and paragon of selfishness, has nothing more dangerous in mind than fleecing his friends at cards and dreaming of glory in the fencing circle. But he never could resist an invitation.
Inquisitor Glokta, cripple turned torturer, would like nothing better than to see Jezal come home in a box. And when an invitation arrives in his office, he realises he might just get his wish.
Enter the wizard, Bayaz, better known as Legend; a bald old man with a terrible temper and a flair for the dramatic. Once a year, he hosts a magical performance in which the audience and the performers are one and the same.
Welcome, welcome to Caraval…beware of getting swept too far away.
This was very hard to do. The two books could not be more different. But I tried my best.
The Archived and The Hunger Games
In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV.
Most children in Panem dread the Reaping each year. But Mackenzie Bishop is not most children, she dreads what comes after the Games are over. Mac is a Keeper of the dead.
Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen knows she’s been handed a death sentence when she is forced to represent her district in the Games. Underfed and on her own, she is the first victim to fall in the Arena. But when she wakes up in a strange, dim corridor, she begins to understand that The Hunger Games have only just begun.
The Raven Boys and Snow Like Ashes
Blue has a policy of staying away from Aglionby boys. Known as Raven Boys, they can only mean trouble. But Blue is drawn to Gansey, in a way she can’t entirely explain. He has it all—family money, good looks, devoted friends—but he’s looking for much more than that. He is on a quest to find an ancient locket that is said to contain the power of Winter.
Blue is sceptical at first, but as she is pulled into the world of the raven Boys, she begins to understand that this is more than a rich boy’s entertainment and all that she holds dear may be at stake.
These were all so much harder than the last time. I picked the books with a random number generator, so they wre randomly selected from the books I’ve read and I also randomly chose the pairs. It took so long to write these three and try to make them work at least a little. I had two other pairs that I just ran out of patience and ideas with. So I’m going to leave them here and if you guys have any ideas for them, I’d love to hear them.
